Object history and violation description

The site, known as the “Christian temple with a font on the northeastern slope of Mount Shan-Kaya, near the source of Ai-Lia,” dates back to the XIV-XV-XVIII centuries. It was discovered and studied in 2003 by the staff of the Alushta detachment of the Mountain-Crimean expedition of the Crimean Branch of the IA NASU, particularly by I. B. Teslenko. The temple itself has not been excavated. The structure is single-nave, with a rectangular plan and a semicircular apse.

In 2003, researchers documented the remains of the altar fence, which features a passage with a threshold made of sandstone slabs and an entrance located in the western wall. The primary building material is sandstone, with tuff used for architectural details. The temple itself was constructed with clay and lime mortar.

In 2022, the “South Coast” expedition of the so-called  “Institute of Archeology of Crimea of the Russian Academy of Sciences” conducted an unauthorized inspection of the monument. They recorded the temple as being destroyed to the ground: the upper and inner parts of the masonry were demolished. As of 2022, a lower row of stones in the ground of the inner facade of the apse, the northern and western walls, still remained. The stones were removed. No lifting material was found on the modern-day surface, except for a fragment of brown clay pythos.

The destruction of this temple complex underscores the lack of measures taken by the occupying country to preserve the cultural heritage of the occupied territories.
