History

The apartment building No. 187 in Sobornyi Avenue, together with a similar building No. 230, is part of the ensemble of buildings of Zaporizhzhia city that was erected in 1933–34. The buildings were designed and built during a transitional stage in the history of Soviet architecture. This project is an example of the early constructivist period, when the influence on the resurgent architectural classics was still insignificant. This allowed the team of architects led by H. Orlov to become fascinated by the international art style of Art Deco. This fascination was reflected in a number of compositional techniques used in pre-war buildings, namely: clear classical symmetry and balance of facade compositions, which combine an active plasticity of volumes, the alternation of blind wall surfaces and glazing, regularity, classicism of individual elements and motifs. (Materialy do bahatotomnoho Zvodu pamiatok istorii ta kultury Ukrainy: Zaporizhzhia, 2016, p. 231).

In terms of height, the facades of the building are divided into two tiers (Table 1). The first tier comprises the built-in rooms of the ground floor and recessed loggias of the first floor, framed by tetrahedral columns supporting a flattened entablature of a smooth architrave and cornice in the form of a parabolic screwdriver, which creates a two-story portico. On the main facade, the entablature breaks, leaving a plane in which the recessed niches of the entrances to the rooms of the ground floor are placed, framed by rectangular belt courses.

The buildings No. 187 and No. 230 received a popular name – Orlov Houses – and are valuable examples of residential construction. The monuments have been included in the state register. The authenticity of the facades has been preserved.

Five-story brick buildings are identical to two-story ones. They are of the sectional type, with eight entrances mounted on stylobates. The far left and right sections are rotated by 90 degrees, which corresponds to the construction plan and has a square shape (table. 1). The apartments have a multiple-room design. The area of the building is 1966.2 square meters.

The passport was prepared in 2007 by civil engineers of State Research and Design Institute NDIproektrekonstrutsiia. The monument of local importance Apartment Building (protection No. 4467/6-Zp) was placed on the local register under the category of urban planning in 2017 (Order of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine dated March 3, 2017 No. 154 dated November 28, 2013 No. 49-О), the area of the building is 1966.2 square meters.

The building is an architectural value and an expression of the development of architecture and urban planning associated with the construction of the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station and the Sotsmisto residential neighborhood, which became a component of a large industrial complex and belongs to the most outstanding examples of the architectural heritage of the 1930s.

Violation description

During the hostilities, on the night of October 21, 2022, the entrance area of the monument was destroyed by a Russian missile attack. After the impact, the missile did not explode, but left a hole as a result of a warhead striking the wall (Table 2).
